Make an Image Square Online
Use this free square image maker when you need a 1:1 photo for Instagram, profile pictures, thumbnails or product listings. Choose Fit whole image to keep the full photo with a square background, or Crop to square to trim the frame to a perfect square.
Crop Image to Square
Crop mode locks the frame to a 1:1 aspect ratio. Drag the image inside the square and zoom until the important part of the photo is centered, then download the result as a PNG.
This is the right choice when you want a tighter composition, need to remove empty edges, or prefer a classic cropped square photo.
Fit a Photo Without Cropping
Fit mode keeps the entire image visible. The tool centers your photo on a square canvas and fills the remaining space with a background you choose:
- blurred version of the image;
- white or black;
- a gradient sampled from the photo;
- a custom color.
This works well for portrait or landscape photos that would lose important content if cropped, especially for Instagram posts where you want the full subject visible.

Many social platforms display square or near-square media prominently. A 1:1 image avoids awkward automatic cropping in feeds and grids.
- Use crop when the subject should fill the square.
- Use fit when the full photo matters more than edge-to-edge coverage.

Output dimensions depend on your source image:
- Fit mode uses a square canvas sized to the longest side of the original image.
- Crop mode uses the pixel dimensions of your selected 1:1 crop.
Private Browser Processing
Your image is read and processed locally in the browser. It is not uploaded to Fileverter's servers. This is useful for personal photos, client work and draft social content.
Very large images can require more browser memory. If processing is slow or fails, try a smaller file or close other tabs.
